Dmitri Torbinski and Andrei Arshavin struck late in extra time to take Russia into the semi-finals as Guus Hiddink masterminded a tactical victory against his motherland.
Roman Pavlyuchenko’s 56th-minute volley looked to have won the game for the Russians but with four minutes remaining Ruud van Nistelrooy headed in an equaliser.
Then came the extra-time dramatics that sent another Group winner home. Portugal and Croatia, both group winners in the group stage, also lost in the quarter-finals. Spain will take on Italy in the final quarter-final tonight.
