Russia Sweden Russia 2-0 Sweden: Home Swede Home

Jun 19th, 2008 :: Lead Story, Russia, Sweden

Russia has beaten Sweden 2-0 to earn themselves a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008, following goals from Roman Pavluchenko and Andrei Arshavin in Innsbruck.

Sweden needed only a point to progress and seemed content to contain the Russians.

Russia however, needed a win to set up a meeting with Holland. Guus Hiddink’s men finally broke the deadlock in the 24th minute when Pavluchenko slotted home after a fine piece of team play from the side.

Arshavin, who have just returned from suspension, wrapped up the contest shortly after the interval by sliding in to finish off Zhirkov’s cross in the 50th minute, when Russia launched a counter-attack.
