Greece Spain Greece 1-2 Spain

Jun 19th, 2008 :: Greece, Spain

Dani Guiza scored a late winner when he headed home in the 88th minute, as the Group D winners battled back from a goal down to leave European champions Greece ‘pointless’ in their Euro 2008 campaign.

Angelos Charisteas was the one who gave Greece a half-time lead, after scoring in the 42nd minute.

However, goals from Rubén de la Red and Dani Guiza in the second-half helped Spain extend their unbeaten run to 19 matches ahead of their quarter-final showdown against Italy.

Luis Aragones brought in 10 newcomers for Spain’s final group match, resting key players like Fernando Torres, David Villa and Carles Puyol. But it was a poor showing from his new-look side, as they never looked to threaten until late on in the game.

The result leaves Spain with maximum points from their group matches. However, there is still room for improvement for the Spaniards, especially in defence, if they are to advance beyond the knockout stages of Euro 2008.
