Czech Republic Turkey Turkey 3-2 Czech Republic: Dramatic Comeback

Jun 16th, 2008 :: Czech Republic, Lead Story, Turkey

Nihat Kahveci scored twice in a dramatic final four minutes to earn Turkey second spot in Group A and a quarter-final clash with Croatia after a Euro 2008 thriller in Geneva.

Czech Republic looked destined to be the second team to qualify from Group A after Jan Koller and Jaroslav Plasil scored either side of the break to give them a 2-0 lead with just 28 minutes left to play.

But in an amazing end to the winner-takes-all match, Arda Turan halved the deficit in the 75th minute before Nihat added the equaliser, thanks to an uncharacteristic blunder from Czech goalkeeper Petr Cech in the 87th mintute.

A historic penalty shoot-out loomed in Geneva but Nihat had other ideas, producing a sensational strike in the 89th minute to stun the Czechs and give Turkey a shock lead.

More drama unfolded in stoppage time as Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel was awarded a red card for pushing Jan Koller. However, none of the Czechs were able to test substitute keeper Tuncay Sanli as Turkey snatched a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2008.

Turkey will now face Group B winners Croatia in Vienna, without Volkan and Mehmet Aurelio through suspension.
