Portugal Switzerland Switzerland 2-0 Portugal: Pride Intact

Jun 16th, 2008 :: Portugal, Switzerland

Switzerland delivered a solid performance in beating Portugal 2-0 before bowing out of Euro 2008 with a shock win.

Unfortunately, it was a win that least mattered as the co-hosts had no chance of progressing to the quarter-finals after being defeated by Czech Republic and Turkey in the opening two matches of their Euro 2008 campaign.

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team started the game with more chances than the Swiss. However, his side was unable to convert them into goals.

Central defender Pepe had his effort tipped onto the woodwork by Swiss goalkeeper Pascal Zuberbuehler at the end of a free kick from Nani, while Helder Postiga had his goal harshly disallowed for offside.

The Swiss, determined to keep their pride intact, came back stronger after the break and enjoyed the best spell of their match.

Striker Hakan Yakin opened the scoring by firing past Ricardo in the 71st minute after latching on to a clever flick from his partner Eren Derdiyok.

The man of the match later sealed the win by putting the game beyond doubt after converting a penalty as Swiss substitute Tranquillo Barnetta was brought down by Portuguese defender Meira in the box.
